Finding The Best Standing Desks In L.A.

Let’s begin this post with a short personal anecdote. I’ve been working in the professional world going on twenty years now, and the me that writes to you now is significantly different from the me of 20 years ago.

When I first graduated from college and began working, I was 6’0 and 175 lbs – I worked out every day, including lifting weights and going on daily 5k runs. I was lean, I was fit, and I could party from dusk till dawn and go to work the next day like nothing had happened.

Fast forward through 20 years of settling down, finding a wife, starting a family, and focusing on my career, things have changed quite a bit. I’m embarrassed to tell others my weight, I struggle to meet my weekly steps quota, and if I don’t go to bed before 9:30 AM I struggle to function the next day!

While this was a gradual transition, your health is your greatest resource and it’s hard to see how your habits can affect it until it’s too late. In my case, it was a sudden and quite honestly terrifying instance of a large fluid build-up in my feet and ankles that caused me to re-evaluate how I approached my health.

My current lifestyle, as is the case for so many others in the modern environment, requires that I sit down for the vast majority of the day. I wake up, I take my dogs out for a walk, then drive to work and sit at my desk for the next 10-11 hours. I usually only get up to walk over to a coworker’s desk, use the restroom or get myself food/water.

While my body was able to hold the process of entropy for quite a while, it gave out about a year ago. I attempted to get out of my office chair and immediately fell onto the ground due to shocking, needling pain in my ankles. They had grown 3 times their usual size and were so tender even a light brush with my fingertips would cause me to groan involuntarily in pain.

As it turned out, my sedentary lifestyle was causing an unnatural fluid buildup in my legs. After one particularly motionless day, the levees had broken and the capillaries had burst. After getting the fluid drained at the ER, my doctor said in no uncertain terms that my lifestyle was killing me and I needed to make drastic changes.

One most immediate change was the need to stand and walk more during the day. Luckily for me, my office manager had been mulling over providing standing desks to everyone on my floor, and this event was the perfect catalyst to put the plan into action. We worked with an office furniture supplier local to Los Angeles and Orange County – Creative Office Supply – to get the necessary equipment.

Creative’s services don’t stop at selling and installing desks and other office furniture, they also provide a host of interior design services to make sure you’re getting the most out of your available space. The company’s designers work with managers to either work with an existing office aesthetic or create a new one to help spruce up the company’s working environment.
